Quick Shots: It's About Time, Bears!
- The Bears looked impressive and surreal last night in their 39-10 win over the Minnesota Vikings. I don't know if the Bears were that good or Minnesota is that bad, but the Bears beat the pants off the Vikings in every phase of the game imaginable. You would hope that whatever the Bears coaching staff did, however they simplified the game plan from the previous week's disaster in Detroit, that they will stick with that plan. Maybe Bears 2.0 has a shot at a wildcard slot if they can continue to play the way they did last night. Of course, if would be nice if Minnesota was on their schedule about six more times.
- The Bears are headed to London where they play Tampa Sunday at noon. The Bucs are heading across the pond today while the Bears leave Thursday. Let's hope the Bears aren't jet lagged on Sunday.
- Kudos to The Genius for getting the Cardinals in the World Series. The Rangers will chew them up in five games, but even I, one of the harshest LaRussa critics on the planet, admit the guy did a hell of a job the last six weeks of the year. By the way, if the Cardinals do win, they should vote Brewers pitcher Shawn Marcum a world series share.
- The Cubs and Red Sox continue negotiations to bring Theo Epstein to the North Side. I don't know what the Red Sox want, but unfortunately for the Cubs it's not Alfonso Soriano. The one thing that has come out of all of this Epstein business is that after years of success, the Red Sox upper management structure is about to implode on itself. Here's the thing about success: If you believe it is a team effort you prosper and if you think it was because of you, you eventually kill it. I hope Red Sox nation understands that the salad days may be coming to an end.
- Alabama had an easy Saturday, dispatching Ole Miss with ease, 52-7. Bama has it's final tune up Saturday (against Tennessee) before they take two weeks to get ready for their big showdown against LSU. BTW, Bama-Tennessee is a rivalry in name only. This should be another 30+ point win for the Tide on Saturday.
- All is quiet on the White Sox front. Ozzie Guillen leaving has that effect. As far as Robin Ventura's coaches are, people keep making a big deal about this guy and that guy and the other guy. Just let it rest. Give them a chance to run a spring training and get half a season under their belt to judge them before you call for their heads. Gee, I wonder who Sox fans will want fired this season since you no longer have Greg Walker to kick around anymore.
- The Blackhawks are 2-2, but with any kind of power play they could be 4-0. Let's get those bugs worked out early, boys so you don't have to wait until the last game of the season to get in the playoffs.
- NBC commissioner David Stern is threatening to cancel more games. And the world yawns.
- The death of Dan Wheldon is a tragic reminder just how dangerous racing is. His death yesterday could be a crippling blow to a sport almost on the brink of extinction. The Vegas race was supposed to be a showcase for the sport, instead it turned into something very ugly. Losing Wheldon, one of the top drivers on the circuit may be the sports Dale Earnhardt Sr. moment.
