Quick Shots: What Means Something To The Cubs May Mean Nothing To Theo
- The best comment that I have heard or seen on the Cubs hiring of Theo Epstein and company is that the Cubs shouldn't quibble over prospects with the Red Sox because some of those prospects prized by the Cubs may not have the same value with the new regime. Absolute gospel there.
- The Bears survive a sluggish second half to beat Tampa yesterday. You have to wonder if their late arrival in London this week contributed to it, but you play the game to win and the Bears won. Simple as that.
- Every time Matt Forte makes one of those great moves and picks up a bunch of yards, I hear a cash register ring in my head. One of the biggest problems with the current Bears regime is the arrogance from Jerry Angelo on down. I think these guys think that they are so smart that if Forte bolts because they didn't or couldn't resign him that they are smart enough to replace him with a back of similar or greater value. I have no confidence they can.
- Someone needs to tell Fox announcer Thom Brenneman that Packers head coach Mike McCarthy DID NOT replace Mike Homgren as he suggested yesterday. Prior to McCarthy, the Packers employed Ray Rhodes and Mike Sherman. In fact, Holmgren had been gone almost a decade before McCarthy was hired in 2006. You'd think a guy on national TV would know this.
- Lost in the spate of college football upsets on Saturday, was Friday night's Syracuse upset of West Virginia. After several down years, it's nice to see Big Orange come back to the party.
- Finally, my favorite rant. Once again, a member of congress has demanded that congress look into college athletics. Michigan Democrat John Conyers has requested that the House Judiciary Committee investigate college sports due to the myriad of conference changes and other weighty issues. What Conyers fails to understand is that this country is deeply mired in a recession, unemployment is pushing 9%, we have troops on the ground in hostile territory and drug dealers and perhaps terrorists continue to sneak over our border. Does he really think that what conference Missouri chooses to play in is a big deal given those other issues? If you know people who live in John Conyers district, you should urge them to vote against him in the next election because he obviously way out of touch with reality.
