Quick Shots: Rematch Talk Is Silly
- I can't believe how many of the talking heads are pining for an LSU-Alabama rematch. However, logic dictates that because they can't meet again during the regular season, there won't be one. Alabama does have a chance to go to the BCS championship game, provided LSU gets upset by Arkansas and Oklahoma State and Stanford both lose. It is possible, just not probable. And sorry, Boise State fans, I'll take a one loss Alabama team over Boise State any day of the week. Beating UNLV is not like holding LSU to less than ten points.
- Memo to Phil Simms: Joe Flacco seems like a good quarterback to me. Phil is quickly becoming football broadcasting's equivalent of Joe Morgan.
- Lovie Smith has a pretty god record following a bye week and given the Eagles are coming off a big, emotional win over Dallas last week, the Bears may actually shock the world tonight. No, not really. The Bears will get beat by at least two touchdowns.
- While the Hawks brass wanted Brian Campbell and his big contract off their books, they really miss him on the blue line. Giving up five power play goals at home to Vancouver, a rival who has got off to a poor start, is not a positive thing. The Hawks need to figure out the special teams quickly.
- If Pete Mackanin is such a hot managerial candidate, how come he is 60 and never been a full time manager before? This sounds like an older Mike Quade, a baseball lifer finally rewarded for his years of service. And, while you certainly can't paint people with the same brush, wouldn't the Cubs be better served hiring someone who may have managed before. Just sayin'.
- Memo to Hub and Joe on the Score: The other night when you had your laughable discussion about Alabama and LSU, you guys both said "Nick has a ring and Les has a ring." No, Nick has two rings, one at LSU and one at Alabama. Hub, stick with the NFL and Michigan because that's what you are good at and Joe, you keep being Ozzie's bitch because that's what you are good at.
- I get the feeling JoPa knows a lot more about the Penn State sex scandal then he is letting on. I have to believe now that he has passed Eddie Robinson in D1 wins and his AD has resigned, he will quietly go away at the end of the season. And, the university, in order to make a clean break, will go outside his staff to find a new coach. The biggest nagging question is that if JoPa reported this ten years ago, didn't he ever think to follow it up?
- It's not a good sign when you have to go to a silent count in your own stadium because your opponent's fans are making too much noise. It's even more disconcerting if you are the team's head coach. I don't expect to see Norv Turner on the Chargers sideline much longer.
- Usually when your team is 0-7, fans are excited when you win. I wonder how excited Dolphins fans were after their win yesterday. Some teams may have all the luck, but the Dolphins may have cost themselves Andrew Luck.
