Quick Shots: Still Think Cutler Is A Nancy?
- Jay Cutler not only played the fourth quarter of yesterday's game with a broken thumb, but he completed two passes. He not only didn't mention it in the post game media conference, he showed no obvious signs of discomfort. Just imagine if you broke your thumb and had to sit in front of reporters acting like nothing was wrong. What I find hilarious that for all the vitriol last January, people are now sorry they accused Cutler of being unmanly and are truly sad he may be out for a while.
- Don't believe everything you read on the internet. Most reports say Cutler will be out six to eight weeks, but Ben Rothlisberger had a similar injury and came back right away. This may not be as bad as it seems, but let's let the doctors do their thing and then pass judgment. I know one thing for sure: Cutler can play through discomfort if he can still throw and hand off the ball. Maybe Aaron Rodgers can lay hands on him.
- The Bears played a less then stellar game yesterday against a mediocre team. But not all of them can be gems. With the offense not having a great game statwise, but still getting the job done, you realize these guys can be dangerous. Although the Chargers are not the Packers and it is obvious to everyone that the road to the Super Bowl goes through Green Bay.
- The man love for Aaron Rodgers is starting to eclipse even that received by the Elderly Hillbilly. Here's what it sounds like to a Bears fan: "Troy, another outstanding throw by Aaron Rodgers who may also be able to cure cancer and fix the economy by the time this game is over." "Joe, while I was talking to Aaron on the field before the game, he passed gas and it smelled like vanilla and roses. He's unbelievable." Give it a rest, Troy. PLEASE.
- Boy, the BCS sure did a 180 over the weekend. With losses by Oklahoma State, Oklahoma, Oregon and Clemson, your top three are LSU, Alabama and and Arkansas. If Arkansas can beat LSU, and Alabama can survive Auburn in the Arn Bowl, then Bama goes to the SEC title game against Georgia and LSU winds up in the Sugar Bowl. But here's the thing everyone is watching: If Alabama and LSU both win this weekend, does Alabama get to play for the title since they didn't even win their league? If not, Alabama, who? If Arkansas loses, they have two losses. Oregon has two losses. Oklahoma or Oklahoma State will have two losses. Houston plays a crappy schedule. Clemson has two losses. Va Tech? Nah. So, will this be the year where there will be a demand for a playoff, or new BCS rules to prohibit two teams from the same conference from playing each other in the title game?
- I covered Vanderbilt football for four years and it was really a sad end to their OT game Saturday night against Tennessee. The officials obviously made the wrong call. I've seen so many times Vandy shoot itself in the foot. At least this year, James Franklin has them going in the right direction. Really, outside of South Carolina and Alabama, Vandy has been in every game this year. A win over Wake Forest gets them to a bowl game, albeit a small one. Still, that's a great thing for that program.
- The Chicago Blackhawks just had two horrible games against a bad Calgary team and an even worse Edmonton team. I don't care how good people think the Hawks are, you can't win a Stanley Cup if you can't beat the lower hanging fruit. And, in case you haven't noticed, The Dead Things have righted their ship.
- Larry Munson was a one of a kind play by play guy. That voice, that style. Those victory cigars. He passed away the other day at age 89. Of the great announcers of the SEC, I think Tennessee's Joihn Ward may be the only one alive. Unfortunately, with the marketing department running radio broadcasts, you will never hear announcers like that again. They want everyone to sound like Brad Nessler.
- The Cubs hired Dale Sveum as their manager on Friday. Sveum, unlike his counterpart on the South Side has some experience as a major league coach and interim manager. Will see which one of these first timers is more successful more quickly. I think Robin will have a longer leash.
