Quick Shots: Hanie=Tomczak

  • Watching Caleb Hanie perform for the Bears on Sunday brought back memories of former Bears quarterback Mike Tomczak.  Those are painful memories.  Bears apologist Lovie Smith can sugar coat it all he wants, but the kid makes bad decisions.  They may be able to help him with his process, but you don't have to be a pro quarterback to know not to throw a screen pass into double coverage.
  • I think a caller on the Score nailed it yesterday: Hanie has been on the Bears bench for a couple of years, none of this stuff was new to him.  Then why the big fail?  Nerves? Lack of talent? Who knows.  There needs to a quantum leap in improvement in the next week or you may have to return those playoff tickets.
  • Kaleb Haney is not nearly as bad as Tyler Palco, whose name is on the long list of quarterbacks damaged by Dave Wannstedt. Unfortunately for the Bears, they will most likely face former Bear Kyle Orton on Sunday as Chiefs coach Todd Haley is desperate at this point.
  • Rumor has it that the Cubs are interested in Albert Pujols and Prince Fielder.  Big deal, so is everyone else.  While the Cubs may have an opportunity at Fielder because of Prince's relationship with new manager Dale Sveum, the Cubs are far from being able to win right now. Does Prince want to sign on to a ship that may never sale, or does he want to spend the next seven to nine years with a team that is ready to win now.  Of course, as a Scott Boras client, Prince will go wherever the money tells him to go.  Meanwhile, Pujols will most likely stay in St. Louis.
  • Here's something that I haven't heard about what could be the BCS Championship game: Is the championship tainted if Alabama beats LSU?  LSU has already beaten Bama, but if Bama wins the rematch, that's a bigger win then just the SEC West title.  You could say they would need a third game to settle the score.
  • Speaking of the BCS, Oklahoma State still has a shot at the title game, but only if they drill Oklahoma on Saturday.  Odds are, they won't.
  • Glad to see Urban Meyer has been completely healed and has spent that family time that he wanted to spend. His credibility with just about everyone is shot, especially Florida Gator fans who were left high and dry by his second retirement in two years.  It's becoming painfully obvious that Meyer left the Gators because the cupboard was bare and he knew that he couldn't continue to maintain a dominant program.
  • The NCAA coaching carousel is getting interesting.  Open now are some pretty good jobs including Penn State (although that could turn into a nightmare), Illinois, UAB, UCLA, Arizona State and Akron.  Kevin Sumlin and Larry Fedora can't be hired at all of these schools, so we may see some interesting moves.  Here's hoping Mike Leach finds a new home.
  • This blog really cheesed me off.  Bob Costas is a "gasbag" simply for staing an opinion on sophmoric behavior? What does the blogger think he's doing?  It wasn't so long ago that Howard Cosell, Jack Whitaker and Jim McKay offered "essays" Bryant Gumble has a very pointed commentary segment on "Real Sports."  The sports reporters offer us their "parting shots." So, why shouldn't Costas, who is the preeminent sports voice of my generation be allowed to give his opinion without being called an "angry old man."  He's only sixty for crying out loud.  It is amazing to me that some of these snot noses have no respect for someone who is so highly regarded.  Then again, I was a snot nose once.
