Quick Shots: Valentine's Day In Boston

  • If you are a Boston Red Sox fan, you've got to be scratching your head this morning as Bobby Valentine is about to be named as the team's new manager.  But there is something far more disturbing about the situation. New GM Ben Cherrington favored runner up Gene Lamont, but was over ruled by team President Larry Lucchino who favored Valentine.  If this was Cherrington's first test as GM, it turned out to be a fail.  The divided nature of the Red Sox front office is the biggest reason Theo Epstein fled town for the Cubs. We'll monitor to see how all of this plays out down the road, but I was Cherrington, I'd bank a few of those paychecks for awhile just to be safe.
  • I don't know what is going on with the Chicago Blackhawks, but there have been way too many blow outs this season.  Coach Q needs to put a size 11 wing tip somewhere to get these guys motivated.  Some of it, like the loss to Phoenix last night, look downright ugly.
  • The coaching carousel in college football is spinning.  As we mentioned yesterday, plenty of plumb jobs are available.  Names being bandied about at this point are Kevin Sumlin (anywhere), Larry Fedora (Ole Miss), Mike Leach (Kansas, Washington State), Skip Holtz (North Carolina), Jim Leavitt (Kansas) and Paul Cryst (Illinois).  All of these schools and several others like UCLA and Arizona State hope to make the right decision on their next head coach and not make the mistakes they made when they hired the coaches they just let go.
  • Randy Edsell has been at Maryland a year and already there is a loud chorus of people who would like to see him fired.  In his first year with the Terps, Edsell went 2-10.  Somewhere, Ralph Friedgen is having a good laugh.
  • Which leads us to an interesting discussion.  Sometimes it isn't the coach that is a problem.  Sometimes the AD is problem.  How about Lew Perkins, the man who fired Mark Mangino at Kansas, hired Turner Gill and then left the school under a cloud himself?  Or Kevin Anderson, the man who canned Friedgen and hired Edsell.  AD's do have egos, too, you know.
  • Some of these schools over thinking some things. Mangino, Leavitt and Leach have all been accused of abusing players, (which is called being old school.)  Will teams take a chance with them, realizing that one outburst at a player could result in some candy ass running to Mommy and Daddy and getting the school sued?  I feel bad for these guys as they are all excellent football coaches.  But as soon as they are hired, the media will bring up past indiscretions and sometimes the schools would just rather avoid it all together.
  • Bears offensive coordinator Mike Martz is interested in the Arizona State job.  Please, hire him.
