Quick Shots: BCS Championship Is A Rematch; Kenny Goes Shopping
- The big winner in the BCS was Alabama, which withstood a huge charge by Oklahoma State to garner another shot at LSU. Oklahoma State walloped Oklahoma Saturday night, but apparently not enough to convince voters and computers that they and not the Crimson Tide, should meet the Tigers on January 9th. I have always maintained that it's when you lose that really makes a difference. Since OSU suffered its' first loss a coupe of weeks ago, it's harder to recover from than Alabama's November 5th loss to LSU. Honestly, I think OSU got the short end of the stick in this one.
- Spare me the argument that LSU vs. OSU would be more entertaining because it would bring one of the nation's best offenses against one of the nation's best defenses. Those games almost never live up to the hype and usually degrade into either a shoot out or a defensive struggle. Personally, I think Alabama and LSU are the two most balanced teams in the country, with LSU having an advantage on offense.
- The baseball winter meetings are going on in Dallas and Chicago White Sox manager Kenny Williams will most likely be at the return window, not the gift window. The good news for Sox marketing guru Brooks Boyer is that by the time Kenny gets done, Brooks may be selling a whole lot of scorecards because this team may be totally unrecognizable.
- I think John Danks is as good as gone, I think it's 75-25 Carlos Quentin is gone and 50-50 on Mark Buehrle. I also wouldn't be surprised if Kenny traded someone no one thought he would.
- The Bears are without their two best offensive weapons, maybe for the rest of the year. Caleb Hanie is as bad as some of the quarterbacks trotted out at the end of the Mike Ditka era or under Dick Jauron. Marion Barber is a third down back and really not capable of replacing Forte's production. And Roy Williams should be cut today after juggling a ball in the end zone leading to a Kansas City interception.
- The Bears will now to regroup as they prepare to face the red hot Denver Broncos on Sunday. It will be interesting to see what kind of game plan Bears offensive coordinator Mike Martz will come up with personnel he has available. I'm sure the Bears punt team will be exhausted at the end of this game.
- The Blackhawks picked up a couple of big wins over the weekend. They finally get some national TV love tonight against Phoenix on Versus. If you live outside the Chicago area and have AT&T U-Verse, the only time you will get to see the Hawks is on Versus and NBC. U-Verse is currently at odds with the NHL Network and no longer runs it, meaning a lot of games are being missed by hockey fans.
- I thought maybe, just maybe the Giants would pull off the upset or at least send the game into overtime. But, apparently, they forgot how to tackle ion the last :58 seconds of the game, which added another chapter to the legend of Aaron Rodgers. I read one article where an analyst said "Rodgers is not Jesus in cleats." Don't tell that to a Cheesehead.
- Consumer advocate Ralph Nader is upset with the NBA for scheduling games on Christmas Day. I suppose he's made a Chinese Restaurants for being open as well. The truth, Ralph? Not everyone celebrates Christmas, everyone only acts like it. Having football and even NBA games on TV give people who aren't celebrating something to do, since almost everything else is closed. In this case, the thing that should be closed is Ralph Nader's mouth.
