Quick Shots: Bears Implosion Complete

  • Riddle me this: How does a third string rookie quarterback get Houston in the playoffs or a backup lead the Cardinals to a win over the 49er's or a second year quarterback who has taken shots from just about everyone in football, yet led his team to six straight wins yet Caleb Hanie can't convert a third down?  It's called coaching, people. And the Bears are doing a piss poor job at it.
  • Marion (I need a) Barber is proving every bit the reject from the Cowboys.  Forced to start in the absence of Matt Forte, his boneheaded move in running out of bounds and his his overtime fumble helped drive a stake into the hearts of Bears fans and their faint playoff hopes.
  • When you are up ten in the NFL with a couple minutes left, playing prevent is suicide, especially against a quarterback like Tim Tebow that can see the forest through the trees.
  • I've said it a gazillion times, but I'll say it once more: I don't care what you thing about Tim Tebow and his man crush on Jesus or his wobbly passes or whatever, but the guy is a winner. I heard Mike Lupica go on and on yesterday on the "Sports Reporters" about Tebow. It became painfully obvious to me that Lupica has never watched Tebow in college or in the pros at all.
  • If the Broncos go on to the playoffs, John Fox should be coach of the year in the NFL.  Mike McCarthy is doing a great job for the Packers, but he has the weapons.  The Broncos not so much.  But Fox and his staff have done an incredible job of taking what they were given and molding it into a winning team.  Kudos to Fox and his staff.
  • Speaking of kudos, give some to Alabama offensive coordinator Jim McElwain who, despite strong ties to Fresno State, took himself out of contention for the job?  Why? Because he was concerned about their budget and their commitment to winning.  Most coaches will take the job and worry about the culture later, but McElwain probably figures that he wants his first head coaching gig to be successful and a lot of that relies on the university.  Let this be a lesson for all of us: If you think the grass is greener on the other side, you might want to check with the landscaper to see if grass seed is in the budget.
  • Now that the winter meetings are over, White Sox GM Kenny Williams is back to maintaining radio silence.  I get the distinct impression that his thoughts are that if he can shed a little more payroll without weakening his team, he secretly feels that they can contend for the division championship.  Carlos Quentin is as good as gone and John Danks likely behind him.  But with that said, you still have a team that could contend provided their starters live up to expectations.  If Adam Dunn can go back to hitting 40 home runs a year, if Gordon Beckham can get on base,  if Brett Morel can continue his great defense, if Alejandro D'Aza can be a leadoff man and The Cuban Sandwich can contribute. And if Jake Peavy can stay healthy and productive. Still, that's a lot of ifs at this point, not to mention you've got a rookie manager and a new staff.
  • I'm still trying to get over Ryan Bruan's positive drug test,  In Milwaukee, it's an even bigger deal, especially in terms of credibility.  Would you buy a car from a guy that cheats?  Besides Aaron Rodgers, he's the only elite class athlete Milwaukee has and Rodgers works for the Packers who are a statewide entity.  I'm afraid even if Braun gets off the hook, the damage is already done..
