How Dumb is Dumb?
Sam Hurd may be one of the most spectacularly dumbest criminals in history. First, he doesn't take the hint a day before he signs with the Bears when authorities questioned him about $88,000 they found in one of his vehicles during a sting operation. You would think at that point, you would lie low and perhaps, get out of the drug business all together. But, no, not our man Sam.According to Hurd, he left the money in his vehicle while the man caught driving it (referred to by the FBI as a co-conspirator) was allegedly detailing his vehicle. Really, Sam? Really? Is anyone going to believe that you left almost $100,000 in your car while it's away being detailed? Then, to meet a contact (which turned out to be an informant) in person and negotiate a huge drug deal while being a current NFL player is either the height of unbelievable arrogance or one of the dumbest moves in history. It's okay, Sam. You'll have forty years to think about where you went wrong.
The best line was were Hurd wanted to purchase some "Mexican phones" so the FBI couldn't listen in. Because they translate everything into Spanish, right Sam?
The Bears totally blew the PR war yesterday after Hurd's arrest. All they should have said was "It's a legal matter and I really can't comment on it." Instead, they all said what a nice guy he was and how none of them saw this coming. Is that code for "My God, I hope he doesn't roll on me!"
Lovie Smith was an absolute fool yesterday for saying that he was certain that Hurd's drug dealings were an isolated indecent and he didn't think any of the other Bears were involved. What if Hurd decides to roll hard to lessen his sentence by naming names and what if several Bears were on his client list, or worse, invested in his criminal enterprise? Lovie gave playing dumb a bad name.
And how about Brian Urlacher saying "you hate to see things like this happen." Are you kidding me? This wasn't a guy who wanted to buy a baggie of coke, this is a guy who wanted to buy a crapload of it to resell. This isn't a guy who was just trying to get high, this was a guy who wanted to get other people high and profit from it. You never hate to see a drug dealer get busted, even if he is a co-worker. Alas, Urlacher, who has been saying a lot of dumb things lately, never received that memo.
The question that remains is who are the NFL players (double digit in numbers) that the FBI claims that Hurd was dealing to and are any of them current Bears? There are a few players on the Bears that I would suspect and perhaps it would explain their performance this year.
Fear not, this story is just getting started.
