Quick Shots: Bears Wait Until Next Year
- Rumors out of Halas Hall are that the Bears leadership will stay in tact and that new Chairman George McCaskey really wants to win. That said, the Bears are prepared to give General Manager Jerry Angelo (he's not going anywhere) the resources to correct some of the issues the Bears currently have (secondary, 3 technique tackle, wide receiver, offensive coordinator, etc.) Giving Angelo money to fix many of his mistakes is like buying Stevie Wonder a car.
- ESPN had a segment on their pre-game show where they identified which
coaches would be leaving after this season. Lovie Smith wasn't even in
the conversation, nor should he be. As much as it pains Bears fans, his
contract runs through the end of next season. And we all know, when
it's a contract year, Lovie always comes through, gets an extension,
gets deep into the playoffs, signs a new deal and then the Bears slip
back into mediocrity until his next contract year.
- After a terrific opening game against LA Sunday, the Bulls fell flat at Golden State last night. What NBA fans have to realize is with the limited training camp, two game pre-season schedule and multiple games back to back, sometimes in separate cities, consistency will be a factor. Bulls fans need to temper their expectations with reality and the reality is going from LA to Golden State, having limited practices and not even having a walk through yesterday is going to cost games. Not just for the Bulls, but for everyone. Quality of play will not be a gold standard in the NBA this year.
- The Blackhawks continue to chug along with an ugly victory over Columbus last night. It's good to see them win against the dregs of the league, but I'd like to see them play some of the elite teams so that we can really get a handle on how good these guys are. My guess is not as good as they seem.
- Speaking of hockey, Minnesota, which for a time led the Western Conference in points, now has a seven game winless streak. It was obvious last night in their game against Colorado as they couldn't clear the zone on the Avs power plays.
- The Atlanta Falcons are a bit miffed that New Orleans allowed Drew Brees to break Dan Marino's record for passing yards in a season when they were up by a bunch. Well, then make a play and quit whining. It really annoys me when a team whines about something they could have prevented then transfers it to the other team. You had the opportunity to stop him, you didn't, move on.
- The Betty White Monday Night Football open was pretty funny.
- We're at the part of the bowl season that I loathe. Yesterday, it was the bowl formerly known as "The Weed Whacker Bowl." Today, it's the pizza bowl and a bowl sponsored by a Carolina department store. There are a lot of empty seats at these third tier bowls and the only way to correct that is to have less of them or to make them part of a playoff system. The fact that LSU and Alabama have to sit around for six weeks to play is ridiculous.
