I heard 5 minutes of the most God awful radio yesterday afternoon on the Score in Chicago.

I'm not even going to mention the guy's name since he's not a regular.

It was obvious to me that he had to kill five minutes at the end of his show and didn't have a plan to do it. He started out by pleading with the Sox to "let the Cubs have a game." Then he said that if the Sox fans swept the Cubs, they would enjoy it as much as the Cubs fans "sweeping them."

STOP! ENOUGH!

Dude, reality check. Fans do not sweep. Teams sweep. Fans live vicariously through them, but have no participation in the contest other than drinking, cheering and swearing.

As for whatever notion of fans, teams or whomever allowing the Cubs a game (which I understand was done tongue in cheek but executed at a college radio level), have you bothered to read the standings? The Sox are fighting for their life with the Twinkies and the Tigers and the thought of the Sox giving anybody, be it the Cubs or anyone a game right now would be silly.

Perhaps a better way to tap dance would have been to spend his last five minutes talking about the importance of this game to the respective teams and how the Cubs, if they lost, would have their own massive road losing streak before heading off to San Francisco for an awkwardly scheduled Monday night game followed by an equally awkward series in St. Louis with no off day in between.

For the Sox, despite their success this weekend, they have to meet a division rival in Cleveland and a mortal enemy in C.C. Sabathia. After that, it's Oakland, a tough team to play no matter what the venue. The Sox have to take advantage of this long homestand to stay ahead of Minnesota and Detroit. You're on the flagship station of the White Sox, kid. If I wanted to hear weeping and wailing for the Cubs, I'd listen to David Kaplan on WGN.

Then, in his last minute, he started rattling off the times when he
would be on the air filling in. Like anyone cares. Or remembers. Or
writes it down.

Even in these sponsor driven days of radio (and God knows how sponsor driven the Score is. Almost to the point of annoyance, but that's a different discussion for a different day) content still is what holds listeners. I realize that this guy was at a remote location, but even William Hurt had Holly Hunter helping him. And trust me, this guy needed help.

My hope is he'll learn from the experience and become a better radio personality. That is, if that still means anything to anyone but me.

<dc:subject>Baseball</dc:subject><dc:subject>media</dc:subject><dc:subject>White Sox</dc:subject>

Move Along, Move Along, Nothing To See Here

Mercifully, it's over. The six games with the Cubs have reached their conclusion with a Sox sweep and a 3-3 record against the Cubs this year. Bragging rights for no one, which really is fine since I've maintained from the very beginning that these games were meaningless from a bragging perspective. Okay, I admit a slight smile after concluding the weekend's festivities with a 5-1 win and a Sox sweep, since I had I had to read about how wonderful the Cubs were all week. They are no more wonderful than the Sox apparently.

Anyway, before we close the books, here are some of the things that came out of the weekend, including three much needed victories:

Run support: The Sox hitters came through when they had to, despite two less than impressive starting outings from Jose Contreras and Javy Vazquez. At this point of the season, your manager shouldn't have to go to the mound and yell at you in profane Spanish to get fired up.

Q: Carlos Quentin looks like he is coming out of his slump. Or he ordered what Aramis Ramirez had for breakfast prior to last week's series at Wrigley.

Despite the fact it came off a rookie right hander, it was nice to see Jim Thome take one out last night. The Sox will need him to have a strong finish if they want to make it to the promised land. Likewise, Brian Anderson.

The bullpen was awesome over the weekend. The highlight? Matt Thornton throwing absolute blue streaks on Saturday. That used to be Carlos Marmol.

Bobby Jenks sure makes it interesting doesn't he?

Jermaine Dye, you da man.

The Sox kept pace with the Twinkies, who beat an all-star yesterday and the Tigers who have won five in a row, including a weekend sweep of Colorado. This, in my mind is the best thing that happened this weekend. The Sox picked up a game on the Twinkies Saturday when Manny Parra was too much for Minnesota to handle.

I was disappointed that Lou Piniella didn't get his money's worth last night in his somewhat lame attempt to get his team fired up. After reading all the "Ozzie is crazy" stories all week long, it would have been nice to click on the paper this morning and read what a nit wit Lou was. Home plate umpire Rob Drake is a coward for tossing Lou out behind his back.

Nick Swisher played amazing defense at first base last night.

More bending of the truth from the Chairman. He should amend the statement to read "I wish we only played interleague games against the Cubs and only at U.S. Commiskey Park because then I have a full house and I can call it a premium game." He's not fooling anyone, except those who also believe that the Pirates and Rockies were poor draws. The Brewers and Cardinals? Now that's big box office.

Speaking of box office, memo to you Hollywood Types. 1) admit you are a Cubs fan and let it go. 2) admit the only reason you got into the game is because your sister is spokesperson for a big sponsor and 3) we don't wear fanny packs at U.S. Commiskey Park. Whatever. I'm not really jacked because the Cubs are coming in. The stakes are far higher this weekend than just bragging rights and civic pride.

What I am concerned about is a series going on to the north in Minnesota between the Twinkies and the Milwaukee Brewers. The Twinkies have been red hot, winning nine in a row. The Brewers have also been hot, going 17-6 in the month of June. Both teams have some great young hitters and some exciting players. The difference between the two is pitching. While the Twins have some solid young starters as well as Joe Nathan at the back end of the bullpen, the Brewers have Ben Sheets and little else. I know Seth McClung has been a nice story and Manny Parra and Jeff Suppan have been okay, but with the exception of Sheets, none of the starters scare you. Especially Dave Bush, who has alternated between brilliant on some days and batting practice pitcher on others.

The Sox need the Brewers help this weekend to stave off a hostile takeover.

While Cubs and Sox fans renew their rivalry, the real drama is in the Roller Dome. If the Twinkies sweep the Brewers (Minnesota won two of three last weekend) and the Sox can't hold serve, the Sox will be looking up at the Twinkies in the standings. Add to that the resurgent Tigers, who are just two games below .500 and only five games out and suddenly you can feel the hot breath on the Sox necks. Yes, I know the Sox control their own destiny, but after last weekends Cub domination, my confidence in them paying the Cubs back isn't all that high. Can they win two of three, sure. But a sweep? I wouldn't bet on it. And how joyful would Cub nation be if they swept the Sox again and knocked them out of first place to boot? The thought sickens me.

Say what you want about the AL Central, it's going to be a bumpy ride between now and the end of September. him a fair offer and he declined." It's pretty much the same in radio as it is in athletics.

I doubt advertisers will leave the Score in droves (and they must too) or they would have tried harder to keep him. It's all about the money, kids. If things aren't going your way and your morning show host whacks your budget out of line and his show isn't profitable, you have to make a move. Honestly, the way management looks at it is more about keeping the budget in line than about Mike North and whether or not he is a popular personality.

Sports radio in particular doesn't garner huge ratings but does make money. If your shows are profitable, you don't worry about the numbers. But the numbers aren't good and the profitability is bad, you lower your nut until you get to where your margin is supposed to be. In this case, by removing North from the equation, the Score will send more money to the bottom line even if they give raises to existing personnel to do the morning show.

Radio is no longer about talent or showmanship, it's about keeping your station profitable. National league rules, kids. You pull the pitcher early. Especially when you have the set up the Sox allegedly have. It was an exciting game, and in the end, the Sox came up on the short end of a one run game.

Today was an embarrassment. The Cubs put up a nine spot in the fourth inning on the Sox. Jose Contreras stood on the mound and gave up consecutive home runs to a guy who was sent packing by the Padres and a guy who is a middling player. And then there were singles and doubles and another home run. And then Boone Logan and another home run.

In my opinion, Ozzie should have moved a little quicker on getting Contreras out. I would have pulled him after Jason Marquis was down two strikes and then singled. The bullpen hasn't had much work lately and even if you had to trot Adam Russell out there, at least you are trying to change the momentum. By letting Contreras twist, Ozzie allowed the Cubs to get a lead so big his team couldn't overcome it.

It was an embarrassment.

And when you stop and think that most of the National League has beat up both Ted Lilly and Marquis, how good are the Sox chances tomorrow night against the most effective Cub pitcher, Ryan Dumpster.

Don't give me the excuse that the Sox are struggling on the road. This was not a road game. The players slept in their own beds. They drove their own cars to the ballpark. Okay, so they hit first and the yuppies booed them, it was still played in Chicago. It was a road game is not an excuse.

Let's hope the Sox can salvage at least one this weekend and then take two out of three next weekend. It will be tough, considering the idiot schedule makers have them flying to LA for three games and then playing at home on Friday afternoon. Of far more consequence than city bragging rights is the fact that the Twinkies could cut the Sox lead to 2½ games with a win tonight over struggling Arizona.

Heard in the Air

Len Kaspar to Bob Brenley: I didn't see a whole lot of Sox fans here yesterday.

That's because Sox fans aren't a) going to college b) Presidents of multi-national corporations or c) rich yuppies who would rather call in sick and get drunk at a ball game than work. We have jobs.

Ed Farmer to Steve Stone: So, this is a homecoming of sorts for you. Did you get to see everyone you wanted to see?

Stone to Farmer: Everyone I wanted to see is no longer with the ballclub.

Stoney sounds like he still hasn't let go yet.

<dc:subject>Baseball</dc:subject><dc:subject>Ozzie Guillen</dc:subject><dc:subject>White Sox</dc:subject>

Offense Not Lovie's Forte

It gets tougher and tougher being a Bear fan. You thought after we survived 6 years of Davewood Bumstedt that the sun would shine, the clouds would part and we'd be home free.

That hasn't happened yet. And it may not as long as Lovie Smith continues to throw the switches.

Smith says he will not go out and get a veteran running back to compete with rookie Matt Forte. Even though the Bears running back roster is down to Forte, Adrian (Third Down Only) Peterson and a midget, Smith is confident the rookie from Tulane is the man.

What Lovie and perhaps his boss Jerry Angelo forget is that there is strength and comfort in numbers. If you go out and get a Shawn Alexander or a Kevin Jones right now, you have them in camp, learning your system right now instead of Forte getting hurt and them scrambling around trying to get some one new acclimated. It's football 101 that players get injured and depth wins in the NFL. Look at New England for crying out loud.

This is not a commentary on how effective or ineffective Matt Forte will be as a pro football player, but more along the lines that somebody named P.J.
